What is a Catalytic converter and how does it work?

A car's engine is an internal combustion engine. This engine, after a lot of variations and through trial and error, is today, very efficient. However, it is still a bit messy when operating. The engine forces gasoline and air into combustion. However, whenever there are inputs there are also outputs, and this is exactly what also happens in an internal combustion engine. 

After air and gasoline are mixed and forced into combustion, toxic gases are released into the atmosphere. Yes, these gases are toxic. Yet, they would be even more toxic if it weren't for a device that is commonly known as a catalytic converter. 

The catalytic converter has a relatively easy but extremely important task. Its job consists of using catalysts to cause chemical reactions that produce less toxic and harmful gases. The less toxic gases or matter produced by the catalytic converter than flow through the mufflers and out into the exhaust tips.

What are some of the chemical reactions that a catalytic converter realizes? The catalytic converter helps to convert nitrogen oxides to nitrogen and oxygen. It also helps convert carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide and hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide and water.

Now, there are times that a catalytic converter has to be replaced. Yes, we know how it feels when your auto mechanic tells you the problem is the catalytic converter. Not a nice feeling. At all. Sometimes it is necessary to replace a catalytic converter. It is not common that the reason why the catalytic converter fails is because of an easier problem that was ignored before and left untreated.
