Moving a car is one thing, another is to make the car stop safely. The system in charge of getting this done is the brake system. How does it work? What components is it composed of?

The Brake System has to be able to make a car slow down and stop. The system works by converting the motion of the car (which is mechanical energy) into heat energy. As this is occurring, the car is slowed down. When the driver presses down on the brake pedal with the force of the foot, a hydraulic system multiplies that pressure, making the brake pads close and thus causing the car to stop.

Disc Brakes - In a disc brake, there are parts called pats that are held in an assembly known as a caliper. In between the pads, there is  a flat part known as a brake rotor, which is attached and rotates with the wheel. When you press on the brakes, the pads are forced against the spinning dis and slow it down.  

Since the rotor is attached to the wheel, when the rotor slows down, so does the wheel. Disc brakes are very efficient and work better under heavy usage and wet conditions. Thus, most cars have disc brakes on the front wheels. Drum brakes are used on the rear wheels since they provide parking brakes and emergency brakes.
