So what are some of the most common transmission problems? 

· Strange noises. Many transmissions begin making strange noises, which is one of the first reasons many car owners bring their cars in for a look. Your transmission may be humming, making a buzzing sound, or another type of noise. This may be mechanical, or loud. You may hear it only when you shift gears, like a clunking, under your car. This may be a differential problem. 

· Leaking fluid. Some transmissions leak fluid. This is easily recognized usually. If you see a puddle under your engine, typically of red fluid, or smell something mildly sweet, then the odds are good that your car is leaking transmission fluid and repairs may be needed. You can usually verify your suspicions by checking your fluid levels.

· Burning smells. If you smell something burning, you may have overheated your transmission fluid. This is often a cause for burning. You may not have enough fluid, or you may be using the wrong type. You can also look for a break in your engine which may need to be repaired. 

· Refusing gear. Sometimes the transmission just won’t get into gear. This may be because the clutch needs to be adjusts, or because you don’t have the correct amount of fluid in your engine or because you need to have the computer system in your car examined.
